What is a Notary Public?

What type of ID do I need to provide?
Taken directly from the Illinois Notary Public Handbook:
is personally known to the notary
is identified by a credible witness personally known to the notary
is identified on the basis of identification documents. Proper identification should include a photograph and a signature on a reliable identification card, such as a driver's license.
Loan signings might require different identifying documents
Can I sign the document before you arrive?
Taken directly from the Illinois Notary Public Handbook:
If the document requires an oath, then the oath or affirmation must be administered to a person, and the person must sign the document in the notary's presence.
If the document requires acknowledgment, it is sufficient for the person to appear before you and acknowledge execution of the document.
An unsigned document can never be notarized.
Can a notary give legal advice or prepare legal documents?
Taken directly from the Illinois Notary Public Handbook:
No. A notary does not have this authority, unless he/she is also an attorney.
